Technology Details

Researchers at The University of British Columbia have isolated and characterized transcriptional regulatory regions derived from the Fatty Acid Elongation 1 (FAE1) genes that encode the FAE1 condensing enzymes involved in plant very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) biosynthesis. The promoters modulate the expression of genes in developing plant embryos. These constructs may be used in transgenic cells or plants to promote the expression of foreign and endogenous genes in developing seeds thereby mediating gene expression that affects seed lipid metabolism. Additionally, the promoters can alter seed protein composition, seed carbohydrate composition, or seed development. The transcriptional regulatory region may also be useful for the production of modified seeds containing novel recombinant proteins which have pharmaceutical, industrial or nutritional value.
